"Hello World" from Beijing

Even though the Blogspot website is entirely blocked in China, we were able to send updates from Beijing using a connection to the University of Southern California VPN server. Hopefully this means we will get to post real-time field updates again, after a two-year "blackout" of the blog.

Beijing is as I vividly remember it, smoggy and hot during the summer. I set up a temporary work area today, clearing a desk overflowing with fossil bird specimens (oh so typical of an institute bursting at the seams with fossils).
